Breaking the Silence: The Story Behind My Memoir and Why It Matters
What if everything you knew about yourself was a mystery? For years, I searched for the missing pieces of my story, longing to understand where I came from. That search led me down a path of discovery, healing, and, ultimately, writing this book.
This all started with the idea of wanting to belong. For years, I carried unanswered questions about my identity, my past, and the family I never knew. Born into a complex system of foster care and adoption, this journey of self-discovery took me across decades, uncovering long-buried truths that shaped my existence. I wasn't until I started to dig into my past that I truly began understanding what generational trauma is, what it looks like, and how it affects us all.
My book is a deeply personal journey of reconnecting with my biological family and finally uncovering the answers I had long searched for—all while navigating an unconventional and, at times, chaotic life. As a teenager and young adult, the weight of not knowing where I came from left me feeling lost and angry. I internalized the low expectations others had for me, believing I was destined for a difficult life. Because of that, I made choices that only reinforced the struggle.
It wasn’t until I started genuinely diving into my story—unpacking the past and facing the truth—that I realized I deserved so much more. This book is about that realization, about breaking free from the limitations placed on me, and about the power of reclaiming my own narrative.
Through heartbreak, resilience, and an unrelenting search for connection, I pieced together the fragments of my history—navigating the emotional weight of abandonment, the truths in reunion, and the profound power of healing. This memoir is more than just a personal story; it’s a testament to the strength it takes to reclaim one’s narrative, to find family in unexpected places, and to break generational cycles with courage and grace.
This is for anyone who has ever felt lost in their own story. Family is complicated. Many of us are raised by grandparents, aunts, uncles, or in unconventional circumstances. Addiction, trauma, and unspoken wounds ripple through generations, shaping our lives in ways we don’t always recognize.
It took me seven years to finish this book because my story kept evolving—the people I once saw as heroes weren’t who I thought they were. That realization taught me something life-changing: I had to be my hero.
Healing isn’t about waiting for someone else to save you. It’s about taking responsibility for your mental and emotional well-being, discovering and confronting the generational wounds that have been passed down, and deciding to break the cycle.
No matter your background, I believe that’s something we can all relate to. Your story matters, and you never know how you can inspire someone else. If you aren't talking about it, you're storing it - and that can be deadly. We all have a story to tell, and we should start telling them. The path to success is different for everyone just like the idea of success is different.
Simply put, I wrote until there was nothing left for me to say. I wrote until I got it all out and until I felt I no longer had to carry around these questions and stories. By finishing this project, I created more space for happiness, love, and light. No longer do I have to keep space in my mind or in my heart for the past. I've never felt more ready for the future than I do now.
Sharing stories like mine normalizes these types of life experiences. People would say, "You've lived a colorful life," which is a polite way of saying your life sounds crazy. For so many of us, crazy is normal. We don't know any other way. It isn't crazy or colorful - it's ours and it's perfectly fine just the way it is.
There’s a reason people say “sharing is caring.” It may sound cliché, but when it comes to our personal journeys, sharing is one of the most powerful ways to remind others that they are not alone.
